Nudity in art
Illustration The line between by Rery (on Tumblr)
Thanks all for your opinion on nudity in art. Where to draw the line between art and pornography? Please find here blogger’s responses:
lllluna: Nudity is traditionally a part of art. And the line between art and pornography is entirely drawn by the viewer.
noonename: The body is a medium in art, and a purpose in pornography.
2headedsnake: Art is when you get excitied emotionally, intellectually or spiritually. Pornography is when you get excitied physically.
autumnvillanelle: Nudity in art shows the human body in a natural state while porn feeds false images to the mind.
snikthwip: Kenneth Clark wrote about differentiating between nakedness and nudity in art : To be naked is to be deprived of our clothes, and the word implies some of the embarrassment most of us feel in that condition. The word “nude”, on the other hand, carried in educated usage, no uncomfortable overtone.
Context, concept, intent, purpose, statement and execution seem to be keys. We invite you to enjoy some art quotes and nude art by artists featured on ARTchipel:

“Illustrator, blogger, e-gallery creator, Tumblr keep my eyes open and feed my emotions that allow me to create.”
• Why have you chosen Tumblr?
Frankly I didn’t know much about social networking when I started blogging 2 years ago. The first thing that attracted me to Tumblr is the possibility to have a blog with the layout that I like and that expresses my personality. Tumblr offers hundreds of templates, I soon found the one that I like and customized it easily with basic knowledge of html.
• What do you share on your Tumblr and why?
I have two blogs. The first is Rery where I share my illustrations, it’s sort of an illustration diary. And I share on Rerylikes things I like, mainly artworks, sometimes music and readings. Initially my intention was to share my inner world with my twin sister who lives in Taiwan. But I discovered very soon that Tumblr is an amazing source of inspiration, thanks to its very active art community.
• Have you made beautiful encounters on Tumblr? What Tumblr have brought you?
I’ve always been reticent about virtual encounters. But thanks to Tumblr, encounters become artistic, and I have had some collaborations with other artists and have met some really great art lovers.
I discovered with Tumblr two trends: more and more emerging artists active on the net, and many art lovers who make their artistic discoveries via blogs. Thanks to my experience on Tumblr, we had with Armelle and Nathie the idea to create the community e-gallery ARTchipel.com.

• Tell us in few words about you.
Born in Taipei, grew up in Montreal, I live and work in Paris for over eight years. I think my multicultural experience is the biggest influence on my personality, my life and my work. I also believe that, having traveled a lot has made me a person who needs to be surprised continually.
• What motivated you to become an artist?
I have always loved drawing since child: on a sketch book, a tissue in the restaurant. But I have hard time to consider myself artist but illustrator who illustrate a person, an emotion or a state of mind…
• What are your work process and techniques?
I use my tablet to make illustrations in Illustrator but have always a little sketches book with me to draw down the unexpected ideas. I like the nearly perfect control and the multiple possibilities of the digital art, as much as the spontaneity and the freedom of the hand drawing.
• Tell us a bit about your work habits.
Often late at night when I’m less stressed by the outside world, with some music and a cigarette.
• What inspires and provokes imagination in you?
I make Hans Hartung’s words mine: “Everything we feel deeply must be expressed.” I’ve always felt the need to express my inner world through the images. My artistic influence is multiple: from the manga I read during my childhood to the contemporary art such as Soulages, Serra, Anish Kapoor, Kiefer, Cy Twombly, Rothko, Jong-sang Lee, Gao Xingjian, Il Lee, Yayoi Kusama, Toshio Shibata, Ryoji Ikeda, etc. Everything can be a source of inspiration to me: the clichés of our society, emotions of daily life, people I love or I meet on the street, my daydreams…
• Does your work reflect your person?
Very probably
• The adjective that best describes you?
Ambivalent
• The word you prefer?
Absurdity
