Tumblr Artist Shannon Stamey aka October illustrations | on Tumblr (USA) Born in a rural town outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, Shannon Stamey, the owner of October illustrations, was awed by his surroundings, explaining the heavy prevalence of celestial and natural bodies in his work. A morbid romantic, his pieces delight in a whimsical way, yet teeter into sardonity. Comforting in their often-nightmarish view, the works speak to children of all ages. Receiving no formal training, he has taught himself through the careful study of artists Thomas Wilmer Dewing, Maxfield Parrish, Arthur Rackham, Stephen Gammell, and the more contemporary visionary of Maurice Sendak, Tim Burton and Gris Grimly. A large portion of his work focuses on the charm of turn-of-the-pencils and oil on paper, an appreciation for a more antiquated time is seen not only in his subject, but also in the finish given to the work… done with decking and often times staining. He studied Fine Art at Hastings, Bexhill and Moving Image at Brighton University where he achieved a First Class Honours. He now actively works in Fine Art, Music and Film on a freelance basis. His visual art work is a response to natural processes, compound and chemical structures and musical themes. His paintings often comment on the notion of medium specificty, where the core idea or theme of the piece is dependant on the material process. This idea also extends to the method of application and tools used in order to dictate a certain kind of motion or process that echoes the subject found in nature. She likes to dabble in whatever medium she can get her hands on, including acrylic, oil, spray paint, found fabric, graphite, ink, marker, colored pencil and even coffee. Emily likens each painting to a journal entry. Very visceral and deeply personal in nature, her visual narratives are the reflections of an emotion, echoes of a feeling that she is trying to understand. Her hope is that the viewer will have experienced, at one point in time, a similar emotion and that the image is something they can reflect upon. Their subject matter consists of loose depictions and representations of the streets and neighbourhoods that compose the city. After some design work experience, he decided to take a stab at painting. With very little knowledge of how to paint in any traditional styling, Rex thought the best thing to try on was a printed out photograph. The result is unexpected: through creative lighting, unexpected color combinations and an obvious comfort with experimentation, Rex combines physical and digital mediums to exude expression of his sometimes brooding, always thoughtful themes.
