Toyin Odutola is a Nigerian American woman artist who deals with pen and ink drawings mainly in the realm of portraiture. In her second year in grad school and currently transitioning from mainly monochromatic pieces to more polychromatic ones, she is very much influenced by her past, but lately find herself more enamored with science fiction. The most inspiring images to Toyin? “Those which make me wonder what it would be like if they were interpreted through my artistic filter. Sometimes I feel motivated to explore works which I feel have yet to be presented, certain representations unresolved or under appreciated. I find it difficult and frustrating when there is a singular idea that takes precedence over other ones (as in image-making). Sometimes I fall prey to that in my own work, but I hope to offer some variation in the collective narrative we are in now.” (interview with artist by ARTchipel July-2011)
