Laurent Baillet (b.1978, France)

The reality we can see is conditioned by how we perceive the flow of time. Time - photography is able to condense it into a single image. And this quality, combined with the other one of caturing reality exactly as it is, are two main distinctions of photography, especially compared to painting.

Laurent Baillet does his photographs in the street, using long time exposures. The result is to change how we perceive the time scale. Everything looks very different, even if this is still reality. With these “Chronographies”, first the photographer wants to explore how this perception of reality can be modified. But this is also a way to probe into its other aspects, such as the collective motion of people and objects.
