• 3 words that would best define your artwork: Nostalgic but contemporary
• 3 words to talk about you: Thoughtful, passionate, progressive
• What do you wish to express through your artwork? Wonder, nostalgia, adventure
• Your inspiration of the moment? To my surprise in the past year I have been increasingly inspired by natural landscapes. I say it’s surprising because I’ve always been very urban oriented. I grew up in and around NY and previously focused my work more on the built environment than the natural.
• The artiste or the artwork that inspire you at the moment: John Baldessari, and I’ve always been inspired by the work of Donald Judd.
• A music that you like while working: It depends on what I’m working on. If I’m working on something tedious that just has to get done I like something upbeat, like electronic music maybe. If I’m working on editing a new photograph and have a lot of time to spend with it I like something more calm and reflective.
• An art obsession? I think if you’re an artist, you are required to be obsessive.
• The tools to create an artwork: My cameras, music, my computer, and no distractions.
- - -

Xavier Delory (Belgium) - Habitat | Réalisation_00. Phographie argentique numérisée contre-collé sur Aluminium 1 mm, Tirage Lambda Durst, 40x40cm (2006-08)

available here >

• Tell us in few words about you.
I’m a conceptual photographer, born in Liege, with a research focus on the urban landscape and the architecture. My work is a critical view at humanity through its architecture.
Trained as an interior architect, I’ve worked several years in architecture and urbanism firms as a designer and graphic designer, before devoting myself exclusively to the photography. My photographs are regularly exhibited in Belgium, France and The Netherlands. They are widely spread via international blogs specialized in art and architecture.

• What motivated you to become an artist?
I’ve started my artistic life with the design. At that time, I wanted to give through my furniture creations a view of the world. Later, I felt like talking to the world in a more direct manner. It occurs to me that the fairest medium for that was fine arts rather that applied arts.

• Tell us a bit about your work habits.
My work habits are quite structured. In general I start working at 9 am and finish at 8 pm.
The days starts with reading, then with the web to keep me up to date of the new things, emails… The biggest part of the day is devoted to outside shooting or postproduction work.

• What inspires and provokes imagination in you?
The Human comedy

• Does your work reflect your person?
Before I would have answered no, but maybe yes because order and rigor in my work help me to get structured.

•  The adjective that best describes you?
Self made.

• The word you prefer?
« Oufti ! » ( A Belgium expression that means you crazy)

Alessandro Troso | troso (Italy) - Untitled n1. Oil. acrilic, bitumen on paper, 55x150

available here >

• Tell us in few words about you.
I attended the Art School and the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Besides painting, I’m in films as a production designer. As a child I used to remove anything that came to my hand, then I lost this habit and I began to travel whenever I can.

• What motivated you to become an artist?
It’s a natural condition to me, I’ve always been interested in creativity and the various forms of expression: photography, music, cinema, painting, drawing, etc. that I performed them all. There never was a real spark. The great talents out there have certainly contributed to carry on this way.

• What are your work process and techniques?
I light a cigarette, open a beer and put on some music. I keep on setting the paper on the floor, looking forward to materialize something I can find only. At this point I begin to draw, then comes the paper, oil, acrylic, bitumen, glue and more. I use a few brushes. The dryer is essential, everything else is top secret.

• Tell us a bit about your work habits.
I generally like painting in the evening after sunset. I paint mostly on the ground, of course tiring, but more dynamic. I turn around at my work and I can see it from other points of view. My studio is very messy and there is always something missing. The only prerequisite is loneliness, if someone goes around I can’t get anything done.

• What inspires and provokes imagination in you?
It’s too difficult to explain. What does not inspire me is certainly the majority of the installations that can be seen recently in many shows, and the minimalist works. The inconclusive performances make me sad, everything is so sterile and generally calculated. You cannot stop creativity, but you have to give her the right place: in many cases I would talk more about show or entertainment, rather than simple provocation. Everything that goes beyond this, from sunrise to sunset, inspires me. There must be a good combination of energy and violence: it’s better a favela than a residence with flower beds!

Mary Ann Wakeley (USA) - The Eleventh Hour. Oil Mixed Media on Strathmore Bristol Vellum (2011)

available here >

• Tell us in few words about you.
I am from the Philadelphia area where I still live and work today. Despite the fact that I wear mostly black and have for many years, I love color. For me, color equals life. Art is a way to explore life. Line has always fascinated me too. From a very early age I can recall drawing a line on a piece of paper and then cutting it and watching it disappear. That intrigued me! I love lines and what they represent especially in terms of sound. The sound of the bow striking the strings of a violin have a moving effect on me. Drawing fine lines has a musical and moving effect on me.

Basically a quiet person, I enjoy being with people but most of the daytime hours I prefer solitude and find it necessary in order to create anything. I have no agenda as an artist. I take what comes through me to put on canvas, paper or wood. My emotions and what is going on in the world around me feed me and are translated into a visual form of some kind. It all happens in the moment I begin to work.

• What are your work process and techniques?
Often I will begin by putting random marks or lines down, usually in black using a ballpoint pen, pastel or conte crayon. I might then grab a brush and squeeze out some acrylic, blending over the lines or around them or both. A lot of times I will draw with colored chalk pastels and move the color around with a wet brush or hair spray and then add some white acrylic over it. I like to play with effects. I like to use my fingers to apply materials and have begun wearing latex gloves in recent months.

If I am feeling energetic I will work in large format on rolled canvas tacked to the wall. Often it is satisfying to do something smaller on paper that gives a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day. I tend not to labor over an individual piece. I work quickly, enjoying the physical motion of it, and will apply layers of paint and pastels until the piece feels complete and has nothing more to offer me. It is very much an interaction and communication with what is in front of me.

• What inspires and provokes imagination in you?
All things foreign and exotic inspire me. One of my favorite things to do is to sit and look through foreign interiors’ magazines and books. Even though I paint abstractly, I am more inspired by looking at portraits that use color and line in an unique way. A couple of my favorite portrait artists are Elizabeth Peyton and Alice Neel. Beautifully filmed movies set in foreign places especially in a countryside, also inspire me. And of course all kinds of music. Also, sometimes I burn sandalwood incense while I work or light a candle.

• Does your work reflect your person?
I think it must. I put all of myself into the work.

• The word you prefer?
Yes

• Tell us in few words about you.
Born in Taipei, grew up in Montreal, I live and work in Paris for over eight years. I think my multicultural experience is the biggest influence on my personality, my life and my work. I also believe that, having traveled a lot has made me a person who needs to be surprised continually.

• What motivated you to become an artist?
I have always loved drawing since child: on a sketch book, a tissue in the restaurant. But I have hard time to consider myself artist but illustrator who illustrate a person, an emotion or a state of mind…

• What are your work process and techniques?
I use my tablet to make illustrations in Illustrator but have always a little sketches book with me to draw down the unexpected ideas. I like the nearly perfect control and the multiple possibilities of the digital art, as much as the spontaneity and the freedom of the hand drawing.

• Tell us a bit about your work habits.
Often late at night when I’m less stressed by the outside world, with some music and a cigarette.

• What inspires and provokes imagination in you?
I make Hans Hartung’s words mine: “Everything we feel deeply must be expressed.” I’ve always felt the need to express my inner world through the images. My artistic influence is multiple: from the manga I read during my childhood to the contemporary art such as Soulages, Serra, Anish Kapoor, Kiefer, Cy Twombly, Rothko, Jong-sang Lee, Gao Xingjian, Il Lee, Yayoi Kusama, Toshio Shibata, Ryoji Ikeda, etc. Everything can be a source of inspiration to me: the clichés of our society, emotions of daily life, people I love or I meet on the street, my daydreams…

• Does your work reflect your person?
Very probably

• The adjective that best describes you?
Ambivalent

• The word you prefer?
Absurdity

Christos Kourtoglou | Christos Kourtoglou on ARTchipel.com (Greece)

• Tell us in few words about you.
I’m a collage maker, illustrator and designer from Athens, Greece. I’m a member of the Indyvisuals Design Collective. My personal work has to do mostly with collage, handmade and digital.

• What motivated you to become an artist?
I have a long way to go to really consider myself an artist. I was creative since I was a kid, then I grew up and there were record covers, posters, graffiti, DaDa, rock, punk, piraeus’ folk suburbs, rebetiko, Jim Jarmusch, the 60’s, Basquiat, Max Ernst, and many many more, all kinds of different things that made an impact, transformed and motivated me to do what I do today.

• What are your work process and techniques?
A stack of magazines, cut and paste, acrylics and markers (not particularly with this order). It’s almost the same when going digital, I just move to Photoshop and use handmade brushes and scanned images.

• What are your ideal conditions for work?
Impossible to work without music, especially in my loud neighborhood… I usually work from noon till early night and smoke like a maniac.

• What inspires and provokes imagination in you?
Dada still inspires me. Literature too. What I see everyday on the Internet. But I must say that inspiration is a little bit misunderstood. I mean that if, in general, you have a system of working and get your ass down to work then the result will come eventually.

• Does your work reflect your person?
Not really… But subconscious is a bitch, isn’t it?

• The adjective that best describes you?
Old fashioned?

• The word you prefer?
Desaturate!
